HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Computer mogul Bill Gates is making his mark in

Burbank.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Microsoft Corp.

head has given Burbank Public Library $20,663 in computers and software,

city officials said.

The computers, which are expected to be available to the public in

March, were secured by the library through the Gates Library Initiative

Grant.

Library officials said the gift will consist of six work stations,

including computers with Internet access, monitors, software and

printers.

The library was awarded the grant on Dec. 17, but could not formally

accept it without the City Council's approval, which was given at the

Jan. 11 meeting.

"It's exciting that the Gateses are doing this," Library Services

Manager Helen Wang said. "People compare Gates now to what Carnegie did

for libraries."
