Burroughs Odyssey team headed to state finals

MAGNOLIA PARK -- The John Burroughs High School Odyssey of the Mind

team won first place in a regional competition and will move on to the

state finals of the engineering challenge, school officials said.

Burroughs' 14-member team took first place in the Structure, Vehicle

and Invention categories at the competition, which was held March 24 and

25 in Pasadena. For the second year in a row, the team also won the

Ranatra Fusca Award for originality, engineering and creativity.

In the Odyssey competition, students build a rubber band powered

vehicles that must negotiate a designated course. The students also build

light wood structures that are capable of supporting at least 400 pounds.

The Odyssey of the Mind state finals will be held April 15 in Santa

Rosa.
