Boys playing with matches ignite home fire

May 13, 2000

NORTHWEST DISTRICT -- Two Burbank boys, along with their parents and

school officials, will take part in outreach counseling following a fire

that started because the boys were playing with matches.

Fire officials were called to the home in the 2100 block of North

Kenwood Street at 5 p.m. Wednesday when neighbors reported an explosion

that shook windows and left smoke rising from a nearby backyard. A

neighbor put out the fire, which charred a patio support post, with a

garden hose after he saw the boys run from the house.

Police and fire officials contacted the boys, 12 and 13, at Luther

Burbank Middle School Thursday. The boys said they had been setting

plastic toys and debris on fire in the yard. When the boys went inside,

an aerosol bottle near the smoldering items exploded and caused the fire,

said Burbank fire investigator Capt. Bob Reinhardt.
