Jazz artist David Benoit is the surprise act scheduled for the

Starlight Bowl on Aug. 13, it was announced by Gail Stewart, recreation

program coordinator for the city's Park and Recreation Department.

The event will be a tribute to the late cartoonist Charles Shultz with

a highlight being Benoit's performance of the selection "Linus and Lucy,"

written by Vince Gauraldi.

"I'd been so attached to that comic strip since I was a kid," Benoit

said in a phone interview Wednesday from his home in Palos Verdes. "It

was a natural thing to me. I can relate to Charlie Brown because during

my childhood I was one of those kids who wasn't perfect. A loner, but a

kind-hearted, sweet kid."

A jazz pianist and composer, Benoit's music encompasses a wide range

of jazz from contemporary pop to straight ahead bebop and from orchestra

to hip-hop. His multifaceted solo discography stretches from the late

1970s to the present. A highlight is the 1988 "Every Step of the Way,"

which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Jazz Fusion category.

Benoit scored several Peanuts specials with a hit cover of Guaraldi's

"Linus and Lucy." He remade the song for GRP Records' "Happy Anniversary,

Charlie Brown" in 1989. The pairing of Benoit and Peanuts continues with

his new GRP release, "Here's To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years!"

"I hope people are entertained by my Starlight Bowl concert, and also

walk away with a warm feeling," he said.

The Aug. 13 concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and gates open at 5:30.

Tickets are $5 for adults; $3 for children. Parking is $2.
