AIRPORT DISTRICT -- Burbank Airport received an additional $5 million

from the Federal Aviation Administration to soundproof homes and a school

in Burbank and Los Angeles to reduce the impacts of jet noise.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, the nine-member board

that governs the airport, announced the receipt of the grant Tuesday.

The appropriation brings the total the airport and FAA have committed

to soundproofing since 1989 to more than $30 million. The grant requires

the authority to pay for 19% of the work, while the FAA will kick in the

bulk of the funding.

The $5 million from the FAA and the authority's contribution will be

used to soundproof 210 homes in Burbank and Los Angeles.

The authority will also add to earlier soundproofing at Luther Burbank

Middle School. The authority and FAA will spend $582,000 to soundproof

Luther's auditorium, music room and several other rooms, officials said.

The authority spent $3.9 million to soundproof much of the school in

1994.
