Airport asks city to join legal fight

October 25, 2000

AIRPORT DISTRICT -- City officials have acknowledged receiving a

request from Burbank Airport to join a lawsuit against Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is suing the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority,

alleging there is no master plan for future growth. The airport fired

back in April, filing a counter complaint that alleged expansion plans at

Los Angeles International Airport would force additional short-haul

flights to Burbank.

On Sept. 27, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dzintra Janavs rejected

the authority's claim, but invited airport lawyers to refile. They did so

Monday.

On Oct. 16, the authority unanimously approved the move, and also

approved the request to ask Burbank to join in the suit.

Peter Kirsch, Burbank's special counsel on airport issues, said the

city received the request. The City Council must now decide whether to

commit Burbank to the litigation.

The case, initially filed in 1995, is in the pretrial phase. Los

Angeles has 30 days from Monday to respond to the authority's refiling.
