Firefighters get big check for kids' toys

December 16, 2000

BURBANK -- A holiday toy drive just got turbocharged with a $9,000

donation designed to give local children a better Christmas.

The City Council accepted the money Tuesday night on behalf of the

Burbank Fire Department's "Spark of Love" toy campaign.

The cash will be used for gift certificates and clothing, two sorely

needed gift items not normally received during the drive.

The idea for the contribution came from the fire department and a

Glendale company, Best of USA Marketing. An auction was held in July and

a man named James Silbold bid for more than $3,000 worth of toys from

21st Century Toys Inc., plus a ride in a fire truck.

Anyone wishing to contribute a new, unwrapped toy to the "Spark of

Love" may drop it off at any fire station from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through

Dec. 24.

The gifts will be delivered to the Burbank Temporary Aid Center for

distribution Christmas Day.
