MONTROSE -- Former students of La Canada High School are proving that

children encouraged to study the arts can go on to future success in the

arts.

Cory Peters, Nancy Andruk and David Heimerl have all been students of

Karen Mealiffe, director of the art department at La Canada High. They

are joined by other college and graduate-level students in a show at

Whites Gallery in Montrose.

Also exhibiting are Ken Peterson, Andrew Paiko, Cynthia Herrera,

Katherine Moeller and Julie Shafer.

On exhibit are elegant hand-blown glass, small oil paintings, bold

figurative works and dramatic photography. Colleges represented are Cal

State San Luis Obispo, Brigham Young University, Art Center College of

Design and UC Irvine art departments.

Pieces are for sale and priced affordably, said Linda Strack, owner of

the gallery.

Whites Gallery is at 2414 Honolulu Ave., Montrose. Gallery hours are 9

Descanso offers

Easter egg hunts

Children can celebrate Easter weekend at Descanso Gardens by

participating in egg hunts today, sponsored by the Descanso Guild. The

first hunt begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be repeated in 45-minute

intervals until 2:45 p.m.

Tickets are $3 per child and will be available 30 minutes before each

scheduled hunt on a first-come, first-served basis. The ticket price

includes a basket and candy.

The Easter celebration is part of the Spring Festival of Flowers. The

gardens will be open on Easter Sunday. Visitors to Descanso will be met

by a flourish of blooms, including roses, daffodils, lilacs, Dutch

hyacinths, Dutch iris and other spring performers. The Tulip Promenade is

bursting with color, having been planted with some 20,000 tulips and

representing 75 varieties.

A highlight of the festival is the new topiary exhibit of nine

life-size surfing rhinos, based on characters from the book "Rhinos Who

Surf" by Julie Mammano. The topiary display was created by Pat Hammer,

owner of Samia Rose Nursery. It will remain at Descanso through May 13.

Gardens admission, which is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and

students, $1 for ages 5 to 12 and free for those under 5. Tram tours are

$2. Parking is free. Descanso Gardens, at 1418 Descanso Drive in La

Canada Flintridge, is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. For

Burbank residents will be admitted free on Easter Sunday to the

musical "Working," continuing at the GTC Burbank Theater, 1100 W. Clark
