students 16 to 19 years old are recognized for service to their community

and leadership achievements that demonstrate a commitment to the

advancement of the status of women worldwide.

Zonta gives the award on local, district and international levels.

Marissa's list of accomplishments is a long one. She has served two terms

as student body president at John Burroughs High School, representing

students at school administration and Burbank school board meetings. She

is a member of the Interact Club, a school service organization that

supports the Salvation Army, the Burbank Temporary Aid Center and Best

Buddies, a club that promotes relationships between mentally challenged

students on campus and other students.

Marissa founded the John Burroughs High School chapter of the Junior

Statesmen of America and is a member of the Global Awareness Club at her

school. Two summers ago, she was one of 13 students to visit Burbank's

Sister City, Ota, Japan, for two weeks. She is still active with the

Sister City Committee.

Marissa also teaches religious education to 23 third- and fourth-grade

students at her church. Marissa's focus in college will be economics. Her

belief that "anything is possible" is one of the reasons she was chosen

to be honored with this award.

Congratulations Marissa!

Zonta is also proud to announce Frank Leroy Reed as the winner of its

annual $800 scholarship award. Frank is a graduating student at Burbank

High School and plans to pursue a marine biology major at the University

of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.

The Zonta scholarship is the latest in a long list of awards and

honors for Reed. In 1999, he was a member of the All-Academic Team at

Burbank High School, received the Scholastic CIF Outstanding Academic

Award and a Certificate of Distinguished Scholarship from the California

Institute of Technology. He was also homecoming king in 2000.

Congratulations to you too, Frank!

At a recent meeting of the Zonta Club of the Burbank Area, new Burbank

City Treasurer Donna Anderson was initiated as a member of the club.
