Orphaned life is not for the dogs

December 12, 2001

BURBANK -- A spaniel named R-gus already found a home, and a Dalmatian

named Cookie is on the verge of finding new owners.

If the happy, once-orphaned canines have a holiday wish, it will be

answered this weekend as zealous new owners adopt the animals from the

Pet Adoption Center, a nonprofit pet adoption hub now on the third floor

of the Media City Center mall, open until Dec. 23.

Eager dogs, cats, rabbits and hamsters await that moment when a

shopper passes by the colorfully adorned pet center and saves the animals

from the life of an orphan or, worse yet, from being euthanized.

For some, the center has already become their salvation. Last weekend,

the center's first weekend of operation, volunteers adopted out two dogs

and four cats.

"The first weekend went very well, though it was very hectic," center

coordinator Ellie Knapp said. "Every life we can save, we're happy."

The pet-adoption effort is staffed by city employees, senior

volunteers, high school students and civic club members.

Animals from the Burbank Animal Shelter and shelters in Los Angeles

are available for adoption.

Cost for dogs and spay or neutering is $45. Those that are they've

already been altered cost $15.

Cats are $40, $10 if already spayed or neutered.

Unaltered rabbits are $30. If they have been spayed or neutered, they

are $5.

Hamsters are also available.
