Singing themselves horse

RANCHO DISTRICT -- The echo of "Jingle Bells" jangled with the canter

of carolers on horseback Sunday as about 20 riders from Corral 38 rode

their horses through the Rancho District to spread holiday cheer and

receive it.

The group -- a local chapter of Equestrian Trails Inc., a national

horse riders organization -- stopped at homes, where they sang to

residents and collected canned food and donations for the Burbank

Temporary Aid Center.

The riders, as well as others who tagged along, met at Bar S Stables

on Allen Street to start the merriment. They were accompanied by a truck

with a sound system playing background music; their horses' saddles were

adorned with Christmas decorations, twinkling lights and tinsel.

"It makes everybody feel good," said Lynn Brown, a member of the

chapter, which encompasses Burbank and Glendale. "The ride gives our

members something fun to do while benefiting others."

Over the past 10 years, the ride has become a tradition. It's not

unusual for seniors in wheelchairs to come out and listen to the

carolers, Brown said.

"We carol for them and we go on to the next spot," she said. "It's

really fun."
