GLENDALE -- The 30th anniversary screening of "Willy Wonka and the

Chocolate Factory" kicks off a series of events leading up to the new

year.

The film classic, starring Gene Wilder, will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m.

today at The Alex Theatre in Glendale.

" 'Willy Wonka' is one of those classic family films that not many

people have had the opportunity to see on the big screen," Barry McComb,

theater executive director, said.

The movie will be preceded by Walt Disney's classic cartoon "Donald's

Snow Fight" (1942) directed by Jack King.

"Willy Wonka" is a special screening added to The Alex new film series

featuring "Wizard of Oz" 10 a.m. Jan 26, "Lassie Come Home" 10 a.m. March

2 and "The Adventures of Robin Hood" at 10 a.m. June 1.

Tickets are $7.50, $5 for children and can be purchased at the box

office or by calling 243-2539. The Alex is at 216 N. Brand Blvd.,

Glendale.

JAZZ

Jax Bar and Grill offers nightly jazz

Jax Bar and Grill offers live entertainment every night of the week.

Show times are 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 p.m. to 1:30

a.m. Friday and Saturday; and 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Happy Hour Jazz

is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Tonight, it's Nelson Adelard, and Sunday, Dead Ringer takes the stage.

On New Year's Eve, the spotlight shines on Dave Culwell and the Chordless

Quartet.

There is no cover charge and no minimum. Jax is at 339 N. Brand Blvd.,

DANCING

Go to Giggles for salsa, Latin House

Giggles, 215 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale, offers a mixture of dancing

and salsa lessons Fridays. Salsa and merengue dancing are offered on the

lower level on Friday and Saturday. On the main floor, Spanish Rock and

Pop are played Friday, while Latin House, Trance and Top 40 are offered

Saturday. There is a strict dress code.

The club is open 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is

$12 both nights.

On New Year's Eve, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be party favors,

a champagne toast at midnight and big screens on which to watch the big

ball drop. Tickets purchased in advance are $25. The price for tickets at

the door will be announced. Dress is semi-formal. Salsa and merengue

music will be played on lower level and Top 40 and disco music will be

played on the main floor.
