HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Homework help is just a computer away for local
students.
Children in fifth through 12th grade can get homework assistance via
the Internet at a computer at Burbank Central Library.
The program connects students to a tutor for up to 20 minutes of
homework help in math, science, social studies or English. Students sign
up for an allotted time.
The free service is offered to students from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday
through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The program used is
similar to one available online through home computers that charges about
$100 a month.
Although many students don't yet know about the homework help, library
coordinator Holly Ziman is confident the program will catch on.
"It's really helpful for kids who are doing their homework when the
schools are closed and the teachers aren't around," Ziman said. "Using
this computer they get adult expertise, for free."
The tutors are certified teachers, college professors, professional
tutors and graduate students from across the country.
Ziman hopes that in the future, students will be able to access the
help through computers at home.
