May 08, 2002

Maya Kukes

NORTHWEST DISTRICT -- Big and small, short-haired and long -- all

kinds of dogs were at an obedience competition at Ralph Foy Park.

The Sunday event was sponsored by the Hollywood Dog Obedience Club.

Nancie Rogers, the club's president, said one of the most memorable

dogs was a Great Dane she described as being "the size of a small cow."

She estimated that dog weighed about 150 pounds.

The American Kennel Club-sanctioned competition brought together more

than 100 dogs and their handlers. Competitors ranged from novice to

expert. Some handlers were experienced; for others, the four-hour

competition was their very first.

The big winner for the day was a border collie handled by Louise

Merideth.
