BELL-JEFF AT MALIBU

* WHEN: 2 p.m. today.

* WHERE: Malibu High.

* RECORDS: The Guards and Sharks are 1-1.

* LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated La Verne Lutheran 33-0; Malibu

defeated L.A. Ribet Academy, 43-0.

* OUTLOOK: The Guards haven't exactly burned up the field on

offense this season. The team has gained just 159 total yards of

total offense in two games. However, the Guards are at .500 and could

add to the winning in a nonleague game against Malibu. As in the

Lutheran game, Bell-Jeff used defense to offset an offense that is

still finding its stride. That defense might be called upon again to

keep the team grounded against the Sharks. Winning last week is

something Malibu is unaccustomed to. It was the school's first

victory since 1999, and it broke a 13-game losing streak. The win was

also the Sharks' first shutout and the first time it has scored more

than 35 points in seven seasons. Under Coach Rich Lawson, the team is

senior-heavy, with 13 of its 19 players being seniors. Malibu is led

by Lars Edmand and Jeremy Kent, who take turns at fullback and

tailback. It is likely that if the Guards control the ground, they

will control the game.

* SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Guards will get a crack at the Ribet

team in a nonleague game Oct. 12 at Ribet.
