Candidates ready to square off at forum

October 19, 2002

Gretchen Hoffman

Voters in Burbank and Glendale have the chance to pick the brains

of eight candidates vying for the 43rd Assembly District and 27th and

29th Congressional districts.

The League of Women Voters of Glendale/Burbank is hosting a

candidates' forum from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in City Council

chambers. The forum is open to the public and will be broadcast on

Charter Communications Channel 6.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and the challengers for his 29th

District seat -- Republican Jim Scileppi and Libertarian Ted Brown --

will take part, as will 27th Congressional District contenders Rep.

Brad Sherman (D-Mission Hills) and Republican Robert Levy. Because of

redistricting that takes effect after the election, Sherman will

represent part of Burbank.

The candidates for the 43rd Assembly District -- Assemblyman Dario

Frommer (D-Burbank), Republican Ingrid Geyer and Sandor J. Woren --

will also participate in the forum.

"We know that the most important thing that an American citizen

has is the right to vote," said Connie Wilson of the League of Women

Voters of Glendale/Burbank. "What they are contributing to is making

democracy work."

"They're electing people to represent them and represent some of

the views they think are important," she added. "We don't always have

the best officials. Either vote them in or vote them out."

Questions can be submitted in advance, and the forum will be

moderated by a panel, including Burbank Chamber of Commerce Executive

Director Susan Bowers and Barbara Inatsugu, president of the state

League of Women Voters.

"We want the citizens to participate, even if they can't attend

the forum," Wilson said. "It is our duty to let the people who are

going to represent us know about the issues at hand."
