City suffers brief blackout

December 18, 2002

The lights went out for nearly 1,500 homeowners and 300 businesses

when palm fronds hit a power line during Monday's rainstorm.

The outage affected users from Hollywood Way to the North

Hollywood border, and from Burbank Boulevard to Magnolia Boulevard,

said Greg Simany, Burbank Water and Power assistant general manager.

Power was out from 2:21 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fronds were from

privately owned trees, which the city is not responsible for

trimming, Simay said. However, the city must repair damage that

results from storms.

"We would have thought [the outage] was moisture-related, but that

wasn't it," BWP General Manager Ron Davis said.
