Man arrested after stabbing

MEDIA CITY CENTER -- A Los Angeles man was arrested on suspicion

of stabbing another man in the food court of the Media City Center.

The 20-year-old victim was stabbed in the shoulder Thursday,

Police Sgt. John Dilibert said. The man was treated at Providence St.

Joseph Medical Center, and his injuries did not appear to be

life-threatening, Dilibert said.

Alvin Hernandez Silva, 22, allegedly stabbed the victim in a

hallway near a bathroom in the mall's dining area. Silva was with

another man, who escaped.

It appeared the three men knew each other and exchanged words,

Dilibert said.

Witnesses gave officers descriptions of the men, and Silva was

stopped and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A knife with a

3-inch blade was found in a nearby bush.

HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Families can celebrate the end of 2002 and

the beginning of 2003 under the stars at a party and hike at the

Stough Canyon Nature Center.

Enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Verdugo Mountains beginning

at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. There will be crafts, games, an astronomy

lesson and a 45-minute easy-pace, half-mile hike to the lookout above

the nature center.

Cost is $5 per person, and there is no limit to the number of

people who can attend.

Children's day camp explores nature

HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- A nature day camp for 3- to 5-year-olds

begins at 9 a.m. Monday at Stough Canyon Nature Center. Parents can

register their children for the entire four-day program or for one or

more days.

Campers will receive a bandana and participate in hikes, crafts

and nature activities during the half-day camp. A snack is provided

daily.

Children will learn about the different plants and animals that

live in the Verdugo Mountains, and how everything fits into the web

of life.

The cost for the four days is $35. Registration for three days is

$30 and one or two days is $12 each day.

Birth certificate or other proof of age is required before camp

begins.
