Music Director Jeffrey Kahane conducted the chamber orchestra's
strings in a concert that featured soloists Hilary Hahn on violin and
Allan Vogel on oboe.
They performed concertos by J.S. Bach, the most famous composer of
the Baroque era.
Local chamber orchestra musicians attending were David Washburn,
Douglas Davis, Jennifer Munday, Connie Kupka and Armen Ksajikian.
Philharmonic offers competitions
BURBANK -- The Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra, in conjunction with
the Hennings-Fischer Foundation, is offering the second annual
Concerto and Aria Competition at the Hall of Liberty in Forest Lawn,
Hollywood Hills.
Preliminary competition will be March 24 and 26, with the finals
performed in front of an audience at 7:30 p.m. March 29. First-place
winners in both instrumental and opera categories will be awarded
$500 honorariums and will be announced immediately after the finals
competition March 29.
Forest Lawn is at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive.
The competition is open to all opera singers and orchestral
instrumentalists, excluding pianists, younger than 30 as of March 29.
For strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion, a complete concerto
from the standard repertoire is required. Singers must prepare three
contrasting arias from the standard operatic repertoire. Competitors
must provide their own accompanists at the preliminaries and finals.
Memorization of all repertoire is preferred.
The application deadline is March 15. The application fee is $35
and is nonrefundable. Applications are available by calling the
