A celebration honoring Bernice Hardman on her 100th...

A celebration honoring Bernice Hardman on her 100th birthday was

shared with close friends and four generations of her family Feb. 16

at the Smoke House Restaurant in Burbank.

She received commendations from L.A. County Supervisor Mike

Antonovich, state Assem- blywoman Carol Liu and La Canada Flintridge

Mayor Dave Spence.

She is a native Californian, born in Cedarsville in 1903, moving

to Knight's Landing on the Sacramento River at 9, and graduating from

Woodland High School in 1920. In 1923, she married Harry Hardman and

came to the Los Angeles area. In 1957, she retired from the County

Engineers Office, as head accountant after almost 30 years of

service.

Family members present were her sister, Hazel White of Glendale;

nephews, Richard White of Redondo Beach and Robert White and his wife

from Oceanside; grandnephews, Keith White and son from Irvine and

Craig White and his wife and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephew

from Boise, Idaho.

Daniel Vargas, Alex Lenarsky and Katie Trimble from John Burroughs

High School were selected to participate in the 2002-2003 Southern

California Honor Choir, a presentation of the Southern California

Vocal Assn. Vargas and Lenarsky sing in the Chamber Choir/Powerhouse

and Vocal Ensemble choirs, and Trimble sings in Madrigals/Sound

Sensations and Muses, all under the direction of Mary Rago.

More than 600 high school students in Southern California

auditioned and only 120 singers were selected. Singers were selected

based on musical and vocal skills.

John Burroughs High School's Chamber Choir/Powerhouse has placed

first at the past four local show choir competitions, and they will

be going to New York this month to participate in the National

Showstoppers Show Choir Competition, where they will be up against

the top schools in the nation.

Students of St. Francis Xavier School in Burbank recently

participated in their first Junior High Academic Decathlon at Loyola

Marymount University.

Ten students worked together on the Logic Quiz and the Super Quiz.

Eight of the students participated in individual events --

English, math, literature, social studies, fine arts, religion,

current events and science. Five of the eight received ribbons or

medals for placing in 10th place or better.

Kate Tucci brought home a 10th-place ribbon for literature;

Jessica Buenaventura placed sixth in fine arts; Nick Khoury received

a fourth-place medal for social studies; Kristine Justo placed fourth

in English; and Andrea Zaballero placed second in math.
