Dennis Prager honored by Boy Scouts

For representing the values of Boy Scouting, radio talk show

commentator Dennis Prager will be honored at the Good Turn Award

Recognition Dinner on Oct. 16 at the Hilton Glendale.

Prager will be presented with a bronze statue of a Scout helping a

senior citizen cross the street, said Andrew Messer, executive

director of the Boy Scouts of America Verdugo Hills Council. It's a

figure the Boy Scouts have used since it began in the United States

in 1910, depicting their motto, "Do a Good Turn Daily."

"The reason our volunteer committee chose Dennis Prager is because

he's one of the best public figures of the day, who truly represents

the values that scouting teaches found in the 12 points of the Scout

oath and law," Messer said.

Some of those values are being trustworthy, helpful, courteous,

kind and reverent.

Prager is an author, lecturer, teacher and theologian with a

nationally syndicated radio talk show originating from Glendale on

KRLA-AM (870).

Last year, the award was presented to Supervisor Michael

Antonovich. Other awardees have been Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope and

Florence Henderson.

Antonovich is an honorary chairman along with Keith Swaner, a past

president of the Verdugo Hills Council, and board member Irshad

Ul-Haque.

Funds raised go to operating expenses and programs and to

maintenance of Camp Verdugo Oaks, which is north of Lake Castaic. The

Verdugo Hills Council supports 6,000 youngsters in Burbank,

Glendale, La Canada Flintridge and La Crescenta with its $1-million

annual budget.

Tickets are $100 per person, For reservations, call the

headquarters at 243-6282, ext. 117. Social time begins at 6 p.m. The

Hilton Glendale is at 100 W. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale.

The council is also sponsoring its annual golf tournament Monday

at the Porter Valley Ranch Country Club in Northridge. The fee to

play is $250 per person. Participants can register beginning at 9

a.m. at the course the day of the event.

The Big Strike Auction is planned for March 20 at the Hilton

Glendale. It is the auction's 30th anniversary.
