IKEA hosts event to benefit charity

MEDIA CITY CENTER -- IKEA will raise money for a local charity and

sponsor several activities today through Monday during a bedroom-

themed celebration throughout the store.

The Sweden-based furniture retailer at 600 N. San Fernando Blvd.

will donate $10 from every bed frame sold during the three-day event

to the American Red Cross Greater Los Angeles Chapter's disaster

relief fund.

Activities include:

* An essay contest through Monday to win a complete bedroom set.

* A bedroom-furnishing workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. today.

* A pajama party for children 12 and younger in the Smaland Play

Area from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Church celebrates 50th anniversary

HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Daniel Smith-Christopher, professor of Old

Testament studies at Loyola Marymount University, will start the St.

Francis Xavier Church 50th anniversary speaker series tonight.

Smith-Christopher's topic, "Peace in Violent Times," will focus on

the Gospel mandates of peacemaking for contemporary Christians.

The program begins at 7 tonight in Cabrini Hall at St. Francis

Xavier Church, 3801 Scott Road.

The speaker series is free and open to the public.
