Fire destroys residence

January 24, 2004

A fire fueled by high winds Thursday afternoon engulfed a home and

caused about $180,000 in damage, authorities said.

The fire started about 4 a.m. at a home in the 2200 block of

North Buena Vista Street, Burbank Fire Capt. Ron Bell said. About 23

Burbank firefighters responded to the single-alarm blaze, and the

flames were knocked down in about 40 minutes, Bell said.

Two adults and a child evacuated the residence before firefighters

arrived, and no one was injured, authorities said.

The cause is under investigation, but inspectors believe the fire

started in the rear of the house. The winds blew out the windows and

pushed the flames through the home, causing the fire to be fully

involved by the time firefighters responded, Bell said.

"People gathered in front of the house and watched the fire until

what sounded like an explosion scared everyone on the sidewalk and

the crowd quickly dispersed," he said.
