Redevelopment Plan Merger What Happened...

February 28, 2004

REDEVELOPMENT

PLAN MERGER

WHAT HAPPENED

The council, during a joint meeting with the Redevelopment

Agency, approved preliminary plans for a proposed merger of the

Golden State, City Centre and South San Fernando redevelopment

project areas.

WHAT IT MEANS

The merger will combine the three areas into one project totaling

about 1,700 acres, which runs along San Fernando Boulevard from Allen

Avenue to the Bob Hope Airport. Tax funding set aside for each area

can be used interchangeably when the projects are merged -- which

benefits the City Centre and South San Fernando projects since they

have a tax shortage.

A community meeting regarding the proposal is expected in May, and

the ordinance's first council reading could be in September.

VOTE

The council voted 5-0 in favor of a merger of the three areas.

SAFE ROUTES

TO SCHOOL GRANT

WHAT HAPPENED

The council authorized an application for the Safe Routes to

School Grant program, a state fund that could bring the city a total

of $342,000 by fall for sidewalks and bike routes students can use.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city could receive $260,000 for sidewalk installation and

repairs, and $82,000 for bike routes. The grant would require the

city to match 10% of the funds, or about $34,000. The bike routes

could be used by six elementary schools, and four middle and high

schools.

VOTE

The council voted 5-0 in favor of authorizing the application.
