April 07, 2004

A Burbank man who was shot in the stomach in what might have been a

gang- related incident remained hospitalized Tuesday.

The 35-year-old man was shot while walking in the 1200 block of

South Lake Street, Burbank Police Sgt. Brian Matthews said. Four men

in a car pulled up to the victim, and one shot was fired following an

altercation, Matthews said.

"There was a verbal and then a physical exchange between the

victim and at least one of the car's occupants," he said. "It's

possible that this is a gang-related situation."

The incident could be the activity of a gang based near the site

of the shooting, Matthews said, adding that the injured man could

also have gang ties.

"He's saying that he's not, but everything doesn't seem to match

up yet," he said.

The man is recovering in an area hospital, Matthews said.

Police are still investigating the incident, Matthews said. Anyone

with information is asked to call Det. Tom Kister at 238-3263.

The area around the shooting site has a well-established

reputation for gang activity.

"It's a long-term gang area, but the amount of activity is very

sporadic and comes in waves," Matthews said. "That area has been

reasonably quiet in the recent past."
