May 19, 2004

EDWARD HEADINGTON

For the eighth year in a row, the Burbank Noon Kiwanis Club will

conduct its "Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance" program on Flag Day,

June 14. It begins at 3 p.m. at the Burbank Tennis Center in

McCambridge Park.

The Burbank Community Band will open the afternoon festivities

with a concert led by Don Holcomb, followed by cash awards being

presented to 15 finalists in the patriotic poster contest.

"We had more than 200 entries in this year's art and photo contest

from public and parochial schools in Burbank," said club member Sam

Engel Jr. "Five finalists from each category will be on display at

the Burbank Central Library beginning on or about June 1."

Boy Scout Troop 204, sponsored by the Kiwanis since 1924, will be

on hand to deliver its historic flag ceremony, a description of the

development of the flag as we know it today. The program will end

with a pause among the audience to pledge allegiance to the flag --

joining Americans across the country -- and the "The Star-Spangled

Banner" being played by the band.

Burbank Noon Kiwanis meet at noon every Wednesday at the Burbank

YMCA, 321 E. Magnolia Blvd. For membership information, call Herb

Vincent at 848-2962.

Fred DeLange installed as Elks state vice president

Longtime Burbank resident and Elk member Fred DeLange was recently

installed as state vice president for the Elks statewide

organization. DeLange brings a wealth of experience to the new

position as he has served as exalted ruler of Burbank Lodge No. 1497

three times in his 23 years as an Elk and continues to be a fixture

at its events and proceedings.

A bit of history is also part of the mix as DeLange's father also

served the Elks as vice president. After 40 years of working for the

city of Burbank, almost 50 years of marriage and a brood of 14

grandchildren to dote on, one would think it is time to slow down a

little. But not for Fred DeLange.

Burbank Elks Lodge No. 1497 meets at 8 p.m. every Wednesday at the

Burbank Elks Lodge, 2232 N. Hollywood Way. For membership

information, call John Holt at 845-4228.

Burbank Y's Men take part in Healthy Kid's Day

Burbank Y's Men recently took part in the Burbank YMCA's third

annual Healthy Kid's Day -- an event for children that included

fingerprinting, face painting, food booths, arts and crafts and

vision and dental screenings. Money from the Y's Men coffers helped

to pay for the physical fitness obstacle courses.

The Burbank Family YMCA Y's Men Service Club meets at 6 p.m. the
