Good neighbor does her part for Burbank

September 29, 2004

Despite all that is going on, too-tall walls and fences, and trees

and Bob Hope Airport, life is good and continuing for most of us who

live here in our dear Burbank.

While watering my front yard in the mornings I have met a darling

neighbor and her husband and their dog.

Jack and Wilma Herman walk their dog, Missy, from their home on

Griffith Park Drive to the doughnut shop on the corner of Magnolia

Boulevard and Keystone Street -- my street -- and up to Chandler and

back home every morning. Jack recently has experienced surgery and he

and Missy often sleep in lately, but Wilma has continued to walk.

Jack has fashioned a "trash stick" for Wilma out of a broom handle

with a cut-off nail on one end. As she walks, Wilma 'sticks' all the

stray pieces of trash and cigarette butts she encounters. By the time

she gets to my house she has the plastic market bag that she carries

with her pretty well full.

Now folks, that is what I call a good neighbor and we should all

be grateful to Wilma.

Too bad more walkers are not following in her footsteps, so to

speak.

Thank you, Wilma.
