Black Monday for Burbank

Mayor Jef Vander Borght may feel really proud of himself ("Hoping

for Jet Blue Monday," June 15) by naming May 24 as Jet Blue day and

celebrating this airline's direct flights to the East Coast. I have a

feeling, however, that most longtime Burbank residents will note it

as a very black day. The day when Burbank (Bob Hope Airport) lost its

status as a regional airport.

Oh yes, for those who live near Los Angeles International Airport

and elsewhere, Burbank may be a convenience, but to those who live

here and care about the quality of life here, it is one more step

down the slippery slope to the 24-hour international operation so

desired by a few.

Some observations around town

On Memorial Day, I only saw a smattering of American Flags being

displayed honoring our veterans around Burbank. How sad. On Flag Day

I only saw a smattering of American Flags being flown and honored

around Burbank. Even sadder.

As for the new Magnolia Power Plant: Wow, what a landscaper's

paradise. I remember when we had that severe water shortage and the

large xeriscape garden was planted there as an example of

environmentally friendly and water-conserving landscaping. Now, with

that big beautiful power plant comes big beautiful palm trees, roses,

and look, what is that growing around the L.A. river and wash area?

More palm trees, bushes, plants and even rock gardens? With

sprinklers too! Wow, is Burbank flush with water or cash or both? And

what is the purpose of landscaping an adjacent wash area, when just

on the other side of Olive are thigh-high weeds and trash?

You would think that the city trash collectors would have some

kind of system available to them to report seemingly abandoned cars

along their weekly routes, or cars and boats that exceed the legal

width limits from the curbs and present hazards for passing cars. Or

don't they notice these impediments as they pass them and maneuver

around them to access the trash containers?

School is nearly out. Please teach your children to stop, look,

and listen before they cross the street. A crosswalk line painted on

the asphalt is not an invisible barrier protecting them.

Dimples isn't making new friends

A few days ago I began writing what I considered a very nice

letter about Dimples for submission to the Burbank Leader. I realized

I couldn't spell "karaoke" and it wasn't listed in my reference

books.

I telephoned Dimples and a man answered. I mentioned I was writing
