Optimist Club honors city manager

June 18, 2005

It was a day of sunshine and friendly competition on May 20 as The

Burbank-Magnolia Park Optimist Club kicked off its annual Youth

Classic Golf Tournament at DeBell Municipal Golf Course. A whopping

156 golfers participated in the tournament this year.

"I'm estimating we made over $20,000," said tournament Chairman

Bill Bertrand. "This was the most successful event our club has had

in 18 years."

Later in the day members, participants and friends gathered at The

Castaway restaurant to honor Burbank's City Manager Mary Alvord, who

was introduced by Sunder Ramani as this year's community service

recipient.

"In the past 10 years, Mary Alvord has made wonderful advancements

for our city," Bertrand said. "We thank her for her tremendous

effort."

A dinner and silent auction were part of the evening's

festivities.

Proceeds from the tournament will fund club-sponsored activities,

including 10 $500 scholarships for the five local high schools, essay

and speech contests, contributions to Burbank Unified School District

Gifted and Talented Education programs, sponsorship of the John

Burroughs Girls Basketball Tournament and cash contributions to the

Optimist Youth and Family Services Home.

The Burbank-Magnolia Park Optimist Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the

first Thursday of the month at the Burbank Elks Club, 2232 N.

Hollywood Way and at 7:30 a.m. all other Thursdays at DeBell Golf

Clubhouse, 500 Walnut Ave. For more information, call Jesse Fox at

JUNIOR CIVITANS GET CHARTERED

The John Burroughs High School Junior Civitan Club joined the

proud family of service clubs at chartering ceremony on May 25 at The

Castaway.

The new junior club, sponsored by the Foothill Civitan Club of

Burbank and advised by senior club member Lauren Marcos, started off

with a bang with 112 members and senior Civitan Club builders Shirley

Pratt and Sandy Lucas.

Present for the celebration were more than 80 juniors, senior

Civitan members from the Foothill, Burbank and El Monte clubs, Area

three Lt. Governor Paul Muntz, and John Burroughs High School

Principal Emilio Urioste. Burbank City Councilwoman Marsha Ramos

presented new junior president Jessica Yount with an official

recognition of the club from the city of Burbank.

"I was inspired to join Junior Civitan for a couple of reasons,"

Yount said. "My dad just recently died a couple of months ago and

since he died, I have been searching for some way to give back and

something to feel passionate about again. Junior Civitan just seemed

to fit perfectly."
