All of the proceeds help support many Burbank charities, including

scholarships for local high school students, Salvation Army, Burbank

Corps, Burbank Temporary Aid Center, Burbank Family Service, Foothill

Service for the Blind, Ronald McDonald House, Burbank Center for the

Retarded, Scholarships for Teachers of the Hearing Impaired, and the


Hearing Dog Program.

The Desi Geestman Foundation, Helping the children with Cancer at

City of Hope, presents its third annual "Evening with the Stars" at 7

p.m. Oct. 16 at Club Ivar, 6356 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood.

Daytime soap-opera fans are in for a treat as the cocktail party

offers a chance to mingle and get autographs from their favorite

daytime drama stars and bid on silent auction items.

The foundation works to provide both economic and emotional

support to children, and their families, at City of Hope Medical

Center while struggling with cancer.

JoAnn Porter Toll of Glendale will discuss the world of opera when

she visits a meeting of the Glendale Branch of the American Assn. of

University Women on Oct. 8 at Marie Callendar's Restaurant, 707 N.

Pacific Ave., Glendale.

She has served as a member of the Los Angeles Opera Speakers

Bureau and is conducting an opera seminar for UCLA. Toll is a retired

deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County.
