The future is now

November 23, 2005|By By Carolyn Berlin

Regarding last week's question about concerns regarding a possible sewer line beneath the Rancho neighborhood: The answer to the question is very simple. Do you know anyone in this city or any other who would be jumping for joy to have 8-foot sewer lines tunneled underneath their home? Absolutely not.

Your question didn't include the "vent pipes" that are to release sewer vapors/fumes. Clearly there are alternative routes that would not disturb residential neighborhoods. The statements that it wouldn't be happening for a few years sounds very much like what we have heard about the planned airport expansion. We're not supposed to be worried about any of this, because it won't happen for a few years.

There is something terribly wrong with this logic. When are we suppose to worry about our future if not now? The city of Burbank needs to mount a strong opposition to this sewer project under anyone's home and nearby neighborhood. Any tunneling under or near homes should be off the radar screen.

I have a few questions. What happened to property rights of homeowners? Who gave anyone easement rights under our homes? Why has nothing been done by the city of Burbank to stop this? How could this be going on for years and no one in the city of Burbank has put out a public notice to the people letting them know that their property rights and values are at risk, and what right does Los Angeles have to take possession of the land under our homes? We need elected officials who will put the people of Burbank first for a change. I am voting for David Gordon and encourage anyone who is concerned about these kinds of well kept secrets that will impact our homes and neighborhoods from overdevelopment to airport expansion to join me in doing the same. We need someone with new ideas who will do the necessary research to shed light on what really is going on in Burbank instead of more of the same.

The attitude of "don't worry, be happy, it won't happen for a few years" is now coming back to haunt us from all directions ... in the air, on our streets and now underground.

I have known City Council candidate David Gordon since the early 1990s when the 27-gate airport terminal was planned and Hollywood Way was targeted to be widened to six lanes with no parking.

From 1995 to 1999 I worked with him on the Planning Board and know him to be an independent thinker who will look for solutions to the challenges and problems facing this community. David Gordon will work hard and do a good job representing the people of Burbank.
