"If you go into the second lane you don't get bunched up and can get past the other vehicles and find open curb space just past the terminal door," Gill said.

The airport also advises that alternate forms of transportation, such as taxis, shuttle vans or public transportation be used to avoid having to park, Gill said.

Although no additional security measures will be added for the holiday weekend, the sheer volume of people will create long lines, said Shannon Garcia-Hamilton, federal security director at Bob Hope Airport.

"Our primary focus is ensuring the safety and security of the traveling public and we are asking that the public contribute to that safety by using what we call a holiday checklist," Garcia-Hamilton said.

As part of the checklist, travelers are advised to not overstuff their baggage, to pack fragile items in carry-on luggage, or carry wrapped gifts. If a wrapped gift sets off a security alarm, she explained, security officers will need to unwrap the gift to inspect it.

Although the holidays can be hectic, Garcia Hamilton said, many airport employees look forward to it.

"We're geared up," she said. "The office staff comes out of the office and works alongside the employees. It's kind of like our Super Bowl."
