Bell-Jeff victory is historic

Bellarmine-Jefferson 3, St. Genevieve 0: It didn't take the Guards long to get their first-ever victory after going winless last season.

Bell-Jeff opened its season Monday with a nonleague win at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Junior Midfielder Kelsey Carapia scored all three goals for the Guards. Junior Forward Donna Loya had three assists.

A strong defense enabled the Guards to earn the shutout. The defense was led by freshman sweeper Taylor Nelson, along with seniors Yvette Madrid, Angelica Johnson, Monica Garcia and sophomore goalkeeper Alana Segura.


The midfield held steady with contributions by senior Miranda Romano, junior Sara Garcia, sophomores Vanessa Rivas and Samantha Guillen and freshmen Hilary Darling and Shelby Ingram.

"It's a terrific start," Bell-Jeff Coach Charles Martinez said.

Burbank 7 Sierra Vista 0: Carolyn Chrzan scored two goals and had one assist Tuesday in leading the Bulldogs to a pool-play victory in the Duarte Tournament.

Bulldog junior Michele Horgan had two goals, senior Paula Luna had a goal and Stephanie Alcaraz, Kristie Castellon and Kierstin Hadley had one assist each.

Burbank led, 5-0, at the half and had 18 shots.

Providence 7, San Gabriel Mission 0: Alexis Mueller and Lauren Suedkamp scored two goals each Thursday in a nonleague match on the road to open the Pioneers' season.


Burroughs 3, Alemany 1: The Indians opened their own 14th annual Ralph Brandt Tournament Thursday in winning style with a victory at Memorial Field.


Burbank 86, Verdugo Hills 54: Senior Arno Mardyan scored 23 points and junior Robert Linda added 18 points to lead The Bulldogs (2-0) past Verdugo Hills on Tuesday in pollo play of the 37th annual Bulldog Tip-Off Classic.

Providence 70, Faith Baptist 46: The Pioneers had no trouble earning the win Thursday in an opening-round game of the 17th annual Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic at Providence High.


Providence 59, Pasadena Marshall 30: Heather Hansen scored 14 points and had four steals and Vanessa Amran added 11 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers (1-1) Thursday in a pool-play win in the San Marino Tournament.

San Marino 50, Providence 38: Liz Reuter had 11 points Wednesday for the Pioneers in a losing cause in pool play of the San Marino Tournament.

Burroughs in Valencia High Five Classic: The Indians went 1-2 in pool play of the event this week.

In a 67-25 win against Antelope Valley, Shawnee Carter had 20 points, Erin Thompson had 14 and Britney Morgan added eight.

Morgan had 10 points in a 49-37 loss to Alemany.

Burroughs (2-1) rebounded by defeating Clovis East, 71-49. Erin Thompson had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Samantha Cross had 10 points and seven assists and Kyla Hernandez had 10 points and four rebounds in the victory.
