Burbank earns shootout win

Burbank in La Cañada Holiday Classic: The Bulldogs pulled off a huge win Wednesday in pool play at the tournament at La Cañada High.

Burbank defeated the host Spartans in penalty kicks, 6-5, after the match was tied, 2-2, after regulation.

"This was a big win for us," said Burbank Coach Frank Chavez, whose team is 4-6-1. "Our goalie [Elmer Aveler] really came up big, he stopped a penalty shot during the game and stopped two shots in the [shootout].


"We beat a very good team, and we played really great."

Randy Wydra and Nico Aguilar scored goals for the Bulldogs.

Unfortunately for Burbank, they lost Thursday in a consolation-round match to Chatsworth, 3-0.

"Charsworth is a very good team," Chavez said.


Burbank 4 Alhambra 0: The Bulldogs (4-3-2) outshot the Moors, 20-2, Wednesday to earn the nonleague victory.


Providence 39, Oakwood 19: The Pioneers were successful in their Liberty League opener Thursday at Providence.

Heather Hansen scored eight points and Vanessa Amran had seven and eight rebounds for the Pioneers (4-2).

Marymount 48, Bellarmine-Jefferson 12: The Guards dropped the Sunshine League game Thursday on the road.


Providence 51, Oakwood 35: Junior forward Jon Martinez scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and junior forward Christian Ramirez had 11 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Pioneers to a home Liberty League victory Thursday.

Providence (6-1, 1-0 in league) junior guard Alex Jacke contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
