Schiff probes surveillance

January 28, 2006

Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat who represents Glendale and Burbank, and Judiciary Committee Democrats held a briefing Jan. 20 on the National Security Agency's surveillance procedures.

Members used the briefing as a first steptoward exercising oversight responsibility on the issue, Schiff said.

Schiff is a former assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles and the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security.

Push to preserve rapists' DNA

Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy's proposal to preserve the DNA evidence found on the victims of rapists and sexual predators for at least four years was rejected at a recent Assembly Public Safety Committee meeting.

Mountjoy said perpetrators were escaping criminal justice because DNA evidence was being destroyed and victims were seeking secret abortions.

The measure would have protected girls by deterring rapists from covering up their crimes by coercing or intimidating minor girls they have impregnated into getting secret abortions, Mountjoy said.

Preserving DNA evidence would enable victims to prosecute their attackers, he said.

Committee members voted along party lines.

Demands to boost border control

Congressman David Dreier, who represents La Crescenta, Montrose and La Cañada Flintridge, has demanded tighter border controls.

Dreier, along with Rep. Duncan Hunter, who represents the 52nd district of California, has sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and other government bodies asking for an investigation into Mexican military incursions along the southern U.S. border.

He cited a Department of Homeland Security document in which it was revealed that that there had been 216 illegal incursions by Mexican military personnel or impostors since 1996. Seventy-five of these had been in California.

"These incidents represent a threat to our national security and raise serious concerns about our current border protection practices and our ability to provide for the safety of our border patrol agents," he wrote.
