Burbank City Council Meeting Preview

February 11, 2006

??SWEARING IN

Local Optometrist David Gordon will take the oath of office on Tuesday for his seat on the City Council. The Planning Board member came out on top in City Council elections in January when he defeated Bill Wiggins by fewer than 300 votes.

Gordon will be filling the seat vacated by former city council member Stacey Murphy.

MUSIC LESSONS

The council will consider a change to the Burbank Home Occupation Ordinance, which does not allow music lessons to be held in someone's home. The council approved a draft ordinance in November that would lift the ban, but recommended some changes to the ordinance.

The requested changes include charging the lowest rate possible to music teachers applying for a permit, and extending the allowed hours operation until 8 p.m.

Restrictions for music teachers operating out of their home would include limiting the number of students to 10 per day and lessons can only be held five days a week.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will likely approve the change.

WEED ABATEMENT

The council will consider a resolution to begin the annual weed abatement program in the city. The resolutions will declare weeds and debris to be a public nuisance and declare the city's intent to destroy weeds.

The county has given a list of properties within the city of Burbank that need to be cleared of weeds and rubbish. If the council approves the resolution, a public hearing will be held on the issue on Feb. 28.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will likely approve the resolution.

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC

The council will consider changing traffic operation in the alley south of Magnolia Boulevard between Hollywood Way and Cordova Street from two-way operation to one-way eastbound operation.

The alley serves the newly opened Porto's Bakery, and traffic through the area has increased since the bakery's opening.

In addition, owner Raul Porto agreed to reconstruct the alley to allow for easier access from Hollywood Way and to restrict bakery deliveries to before 7 a.m.

The city will install 15-minute parking spaces in front of the business and to restrict left turns into the alley should they become a problem, as well as restricting the alley to one-way traffic.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will likely approve the change in traffic operation.
