Chandler change could have worked
I have read and listened to all the opinions about the one-way debate ? how Chandler Boulevard is so safe and no accidents, or a minimum of accidents occur at the least ("Chandler will stay two way," April 29). Well, I live on Chandler, without a driveway. I would welcome a one-way Chandler if there was to be only one lane in each direction.
Every day I fight the battle of trying to get in and out of my car or parallel park. What a challenge this can be. For those of who do not live on Chandler, you have no idea, but some of you are part of the problem. At times one car after another will come along Chandler without a break in traffic. It is a busy street. I can open my door slightly and step out with a car 50 to 300 yards down the street and not obeying the speed limit ? instead traveling anywhere from 40 to 50 mph. I have never seen one speeding ticket given in this area in the past 10 years. As cars pass me they sometimes come within inches of me as I lean against my car. Of course, there may not be another car coming from the other way, but will the driver pass over the double yellow lines for safety? No, never. Unless, of course, I am trying to parallel park, then it is no problem to swerve around me unsafely in excess of 45 mph, as if your house is on fire. The funny thing is that over half of these cars in the next 10 blocks will make a right onto another street, slow down and pull into their driveway. If Chandler was converted into a one-way street with only one lane on each side then my wife could get in and out her car safely instead of like she is exiting her parked car on the freeway.
