Final redemption

2005-06 Burbank Leader Female Athlete Of The Year

Carolyn Chrzan was facing the possibility of graduating from Burbank High without a coveted league championship.

A four-year varsity standout for the Bulldog girls' soccer team, Chrzan toiled on squads that had trouble competing in the Foothill League, let alone coming close to a title.

She also showed her prowess on the school's girls' track and field team, emerging as a scoring athlete in running and field events since she was a freshman.

But she was never able to capture an individual league championship, despite qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries every season.

However, with just over a month to go in her high school career, Chrzan's drought finally ended. Last month, she overcame nagging injuries to win the Foothill League 400-meter crown at the league finals May 6 at College of the Canyons.

"The league champion is something I've wanted so badly since I was a freshman," said Chrzan, who won the race in 59.43 seconds. "That meant a lot to me to finally be able to win one. I was so happy."

Along with the track and field crown, Chrzan also made an impact her senior season in soccer, scoring 18 goals as a forward to earn first-team All-Foothill League honors.

It was the fourth consecutive time she was honored with all-league accolades.

It is because of her accomplishments this past season that Chrzan has been chosen as the Burbank Leader Female Athlete of the Year.
