Bell-Jeff volleyball camp slated for July

Hitting, serving, setting, digging and teamwork skills will be some of the things athletes will learn at the Girls' Volleyball Players Camp at BellarmineJefferson High.

The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 10-14 at the school's gym. The cost is $85 and the deadline to register is June 26.

The camp, open to players in fifth through eighth grades this coming school year, will cover all basic and advanced volleyball skills. Athletes will also receive a camp T-shirt.

The event will be run by Bell-Jeff girls' and boys' volleyball coach Miguel Segura, along with Debbie Segura-Mariscal. There will also be former Guard players assisting the camp.

Miguel Segura is a former all-league standout at Bell-Jeff and coached the boys' team to the CIF Southern Section playoffs this past season. Miguel and Debbie have worked volleyball camps for the past five years.

Checks should be made out to Debbie Mariscal and mailed to VPC, Attn: Debbie Mariscal at 915 Harvard Rd., Burbank, CA 91501.

Burbank Vikings looking for coaches

The Burbank Vikings Youth Tackle Football program has enjoyed a record number of signups for its 2006 season.

The organization hopes to find spots for all the 260 athletes who have signed up. With the expanded interest, the Vikings are looking to add more teams.

The only problem is they don't have enough volunteer coaches to staff all of the teams ? especially for the Junior and Senior squads ? for the fall season.

Athletes will play on age- and weight-specific teams. Teams will play a conference schedule against other programs.

The Vikings squads will compete against programs from other cities in conference games, with home contests played Saturdays at Burbank High. There is also a homecoming. Teams also have the chance to participate in the playoffs.

The Vikings' organization has developed players who have gone on to success in high school, college and the NFL. It also serves as the only feeder program for the local high schools. It is the only local youth football organization in the city.

For coaches who would like to help can call Tom McDonald at (818) 843-1900, or visit
