Jarbo earns postgraduate scholarship award

Former Burroughs star headed to medical school: Now the real hard work starts for Keith Jarbo.

Jarbo, a Burroughs High graduate who played three seasons for the Pepperdine University men's basketball program, is planning on attending medical school to become a doctor.

He was helped with that quest Thursday, when he was presented with the West Coast Conference's Postgraduate Scholarship Award by conference commissioner Michael Gilleran.

Jarbo is the first Pepperdine student-athlete to receive the award. He will have his pick of colleges in which to pursue his career, he has been accepted to the medical schools at UCLA, USC, University of California San Francisco, and University of California Irvine.

In its third year, the award is presented annually to a male and female athlete from the eight conference schools.

The female recipient was Gonzaga's Kari Durgan, a member of the Bulldogs' women's crew team.

Candidates for the scholarship must own a minimum 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate a significant athletic contribution on the varsity athletic level in a WCCsponsored sport and participate in a WCC sport for a minimum of two years.

In addition, candidates must have a record of participating in campus or community activities, complete their athletic eligibility and competed in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which they are nominated.

Jarbo graduated from Pepperdine with a bachelor of science degree in sports medicine after compiling a 3.74 grade-point average.

In 2006, Jarbo earned Pepperdine's Athletic Director's Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Community Service. Additionally, Jarbo was selected to his third consecutive WCC All-Academic team and was named to the dean's list for the fourth straight year.

Jarbo, who was elected team captain for the 2005-06 season by his teammates, played in 83 games. He started 13.

A three-sport star at Burroughs, Jarbo was the most valuable player for the 2001 Indians' football team and was the 2000 Foothill League Player of the Year ? and an All-CIF Southern Section selection ? in basketball as a starting forward, averaging 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Foothill League-champion Indians.

Burbank, Burroughs players to compete in all-star football game: Although it's nearly summer, a group of local athletes will strap on their helmets and put on their pads for an all-star game.

The annual East-West All-Star Game will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Birmingham High.

Participating in the game is a group of players from Burbank and Burroughs highs who will compete for the East team.

The Bulldogs will be represented by receiver/running back Jason McNeil, linebacker Josh Nesbitt and linemen Grant Valentine and Jake Gaviola.

The Indian players are running back Thomas Kyle and lineman Jonathan Ontiveras.
