SUBSTITUTE PAY INCREASES

The board approved an increase in pay for Sign Language interpreter substitutes at the base rate of $19.75 an hour in the district.

District officials say the nearly $6 increase will allow the district to secure the substitutes they are looking for at competitive pay.

Since all substitutes are competing at the same level, the rate is in comparison to what other districts are paying substitutes, district staffers said.

FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY

The board approved a revised agreement between the Burbank Unified School District and the Family Service Agency of Burbank to provide counseling services to students at John Muir, Luther Burbank and David Starr Jordan middle schools; Burbank and John Burroughs high schools; and the Community Day School.

The services will also be provided to Monterey High School students beginning Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2007.

The Family Service Agency will continue to provide individual and group counseling services to middle and high school students on campuses.

WHAT THEY SAID

"The partnership that the district has had with the Family Service Agency has been a great achievement for all these years," trustee Paul Krekorian said.

"They really have provided a wonderful service to students who need this."

SECURITY CAMERAS

The board held off on voting on a plan to nstall security camera systems at John Burroughs and Burbank high schools for an estimated cost of $132,092.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board decided to discuss the matter further at a meeting in January.

Due to the unfinished modernization projects at various school sites, the board expressed concern over the cost of additional facilities expenses.

WHAT THEY SAID

"It's not a nickel and dime expenditure," trustee Dave Kemp said. "Has safety been such a big issue that we need to justify the expenditure?"
