POLITICAL LANDSCAPE:Group endorses local candidates

The California State Employees Assn. announced on Monday that it will endorse local candidates Paul Krekorian and Anthony Portantino in the November general election.

Krekorian, a Burbank Unified School District board member, is the Democratic nominee for the 43rd Assembly District. Portantino, a La Cañada Flintridge councilman, is the Democratic candidate for the 44th Assembly District.

The California State Employees Assn. has about 140,000 members and announced its endorsements of more than 100 candidates on Monday.

Town hall to discuss nation’s direction

Rep. Brad Sherman, who represents part of Burbank, will visit Reseda High School for a town hall meeting from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 24 to discuss a “New Direction for America” and issues facing Congress, including the Medicare prescription drug benefit and more.

Reseda High School is located at 18230 Kittridge St., Reseda. Parking is free and refreshments will be served.

Assemblyman will host block party

Assembly Majority Leader Dario Frommer will host a “Community Block Party” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Johnny Carson Park, 400 S. Bob Hope Drive.

The event is a chance to learn about city services and discuss legislative issues.

There will be free rides, free refreshments, entertainment and health information.

County to revise its energy policy

The county board of supervisors unanimously directed the Internal Services Department Tuesday to form a task force to study and recommend improvements to the county’s energy policy.

Supervisor Michael Antonovich strongly supported the directive.

Over the past 30 years, the board has adopted a number of energy-related policies with the goal of reducing county energy consumption and saving taxpayer dollars.

Tuesday’s action will create a comprehensive policy on energy issues.

County board OKs money for program

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion on Tuesday authorizing the county district attorney to apply for grant funds for its spousal abuser prosecution program, Supervisor Michael D. AntonovichÖ said.

The program focuses on prosecution, investigation and witness coordination services in spousal-abuse cases.

This is the 13th year the county has applied for these State Department of Justice funds.

Glendale Republicans host celebration

The Glendale-Burbank Republican Assembly will host a 71st anniversary celebration starting at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The cost is $35 per person for a barbecue dinner and musical entertainment. Republican officials and candidates will be present.
