Fire units help out in L.A. blaze

Burbank Fire Department Engine 11 joined 18 area fire departments to battle a fire near the Bob Hope Airport at Vanowen Street and Vineland Avenue in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Units were dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. to a 40-by-120-foot industrial building that was engulfed in flames, said Los Angeles Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Greg West.

Firefighters on the scene were able to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, he said.

But as the volume of the fire increased, firefighters were forced to retreat and battle the blaze from outside the building, he said.

Two factory workers who were inside the building when the fire broke out were injured, he said.

Though smoke from the fire poured onto the runways at the Bob Hope Airport, operations were not disrupted, West said.

The fire also did not disrupt travel on the Metrolink tracks located behind the industrial area.

Several fire outbreaks in the area have taxed fire department resources in recent weeks, he said.

"It's been quite a couple of days," he said. "The northeast corner of the San Fernando Valley has been very active."
