In recognizing the value of sports and athletic activities within the community, the tribute highlights individuals who, in their roles as participants, volunteers or professional staff, have furthered the excellence of the local organized sports programs.
Inductees are permanently honored with their names chiseled on individual bricks that adorn a walkway behind Diamond No. 2 at Olive Park. Complete with inscriptions, the walk has room for hundreds of future honorees.
Astros continue success by winning tournament: The SoCal Astros, a travel baseball club from Burbank, gave itself a fine birthday present recently.
The organization, which celebrated its 13th year of existence Sept. 1, used the day to win the Super Series of Baseball Labor Day Rings Classic Tournament in San Clemente.
It was the first tournament in which the team qualified with 13-year-olds.
The Astros played five teams and six games on their way to the championship. They went 5-1 in the competition, all but dominating the opposition, outscoring their opponents, 53-27.
The Astros faced the SoCal Stars in the championship game, winning, 6-4.
It was the team's second tournament crown of the summer. It won a United States Specialty Sports Assn. sanctioned tournament July 4, going undefeated in six games and defeating the reigning champions, the Fury.
The SoCal Astros include Michael Alcaraz, Stewart Alexander, Andre Angel-Bello, Christian Garia, Gabe Guerra, Johnny Guerra, Andre Navarro, J.P. Nolan, Chris Petito, Danny Porto, Vaughn Raiche and Ryan Tejeda. It is managed by Peter Angel-Bello and assistants Tobin Alexander, John Guerra and Jim Raiche.
GCC 2007 Hall of Fame class set: The sixth annual Glendale Community College Athletic Hall of Fame will be held at 5 p.m. March 3 on campus at the college's J. Walter Smith Student Center, 1500 N. Verdugo Ave., Glendale.
