Burbank Salvation Army to honor former mayor

The Salvation Army Burbank Corps Advisory Board will host a gala event Nov. 10 at The Castaway to honor former Mayor Jef Vander Borght. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Reservation deadline is Nov. 6.

The evening will highlight the many services that The Army provides to the local community. The Salvation Army brass ensemble will entertain. For tickets, call DeeDee Ruhlow at (818) 843-6950.

College graduates can join Burbank University Women

All female college graduates 55 or older are invited to consider membership in the Burbank University Women, which meets to promote education, intellectual growth, and broadening opportunities for women and girls and to provide college scholarships for worthy Burbank senior high school graduates.

The Oct. 12 meeting will be at Joslyn Center in the Arts and Crafts Room. Social time begins at 6 p.m. Guest speaker Jimmy Weldon will speak on the subject "Why We Love America" beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Burbank 125 Toastmasters announce officers for the year

Burbank 125 Toastmasters is beginning its new year.

New officers are Wendi Svoboda, president; Abo Velasco, vice president of education; Amanda Hopkins, vice president of membership; Chuck Jackson, vice president of public relations; Kyle Moore, treasurer; Imelda Jackson, secretary; Dan Humfreville, sergeant at arms; Betsy Dolan, immediate past president.

During Betsy Dolan's tenure as president for the 2005-06 term, the Burbank 125 club achieved the requirements as set forth by Toastmasters International to earn the Select Distinguished Club status. This is the second year in a row the club has achieved this status.

Founded in 1947 and meeting continuously since then, Burbank 125 is Burbank's oldest Toastmasters club. The group offers a supportive, yet professional atmosphere in which members can work on overcoming their fear of speaking and leading to become polished, professional speakers; confident, sought out lecturers; and strong, seasoned leaders outside of the club.

Knights of Columbus Burbank council #3472 officers in place

The Knights of Columbus Burbank Council #3472 is beginning its year with officers in place.

They are David S. Ramos who succeeds Daniel P. Ortoski in leading the fraternity as Grand Knight of the Council.
