Providence St. Joseph wins excellence award

Providence St. Joseph Medical Center was awarded a five-star rating from HealthGrades, a national health-care ratings company, for its cardiac, orthopedic and critical- and stroke-care services. The hospital also received the 2007 Stroke Care Excellence Award, putting it in the top 10 hospitals for stroke care.

The rating criteria utilizes hospital records to analyze more than 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states.

The study takes into account patient severity and patient outcomes for more than two dozen procedures, rating it on a five-star system.

City unveils new public art on Friday

The city of Burbank Art in Public Places program unveiled a new art piece on Friday in front of a new condominium complex.

Adorning the entrance to Valencia Empire Homes, a 38-unit facility on Valencia Avenue, is a glass sculpture of a man, woman and child standing together in solidarity.

The piece was crafted by Jilla Parhami as a part of Burbank's public art program, which requires developers to either include public art in their projects or contribute to an account that funds public art projects.

Valencia Homes is a three-story luxury facility offering two- and threebedroom units.
