Burbank Unified School District Meeting Wrap-up

2005-06 AUDIT

The board reviewed a 2005-06 Annual Financial Report by independent auditor Vicenti, Lloyd and Stutzman, LLP.

WHAT IT MEANS

Total long-term debt is down nearly $600,000 less than was found in the district's 2004-05 year audit.

SECURITY CAMERA INSTALLATIONS

The board approved a recommendation to install security-camera systems at Burbank and John Burroughs high schools at an estimated cost of $132,092 for both projects.

WHAT IT MEANS

The district's Facilities Oversight Committee will now begin contract negotiations and explore employment contracts for installing the cameras and will develop a concrete plan for the project for the board to consider at a later date.

There was also an addition to this approval — asking the committee to consider additional cameras for the new field projects at Burbank and Burroughs high.

NEW CALENDAR FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

Trustees approved a new school calendar for the 2007-08 school year.

WHAT IT MEANS

The fall 2007 semester will begin Aug. 27, with the spring semester to begin Jan. 22, 2008.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE ADOPTION

The board approved the adoption of new minimum-wage requirements that affect three positions within the district, including, but not limited to, noon aids and student helpers.

This change is effective retroactively to Jan. 1.

WHAT IT MEANS

Several employees across the district will have pay increases to the minimum wage of $7.50.

CONTRACT SERVICES FOR E-RATE FUNDING

The board approved the contracting of services with California School Management Group Inc. to handle E-Rate funding filings for 2007-08 and to assist the district with all prior E-Rate applications.

Through the federal E-Rate program, districts can tap a pool of federal funds, which the district must apply for to get discounted technology services.

WHAT IT MEANS

California School Management Group Inc. will be hired to deal specifically with acquiring materials and handling applications for federal E-Rate funds for the district's technologicaladvancement projects.
