He's not buying into Congressman's take

I came across something in the Political Landscape section of the Leader ("Dreier hails latest economic news," Saturday) that absolutely needs commenting on.

Dreier took time off from whining about the new Democratic majority in Congress to try to sell us that old Republican line of bull once again. He speaks of the generous tax cuts to the wealthy bringing about great prosperity for our nation. He is partly right. The corporations and the CEOs of large companies are doing very well indeed. There has been a reduction in our huge deficit. Of course that huge deficit was a huge surplus before Dreier and George W. Bush threw it away.

He also conveniently neglects to mention the billion or so dollars a month we are spending to keep our armed forces in a hopeless situation in Iraq. This amount, of course, is off the books.

So spare me the GOP propaganda, Dreier. As the middle class sits precariously on a housing bubble, we know better than to buy into your same old stuff.

I look forward to the day when you are on the political junk heap of history, along with Bob Dornan, Bill Frist, George Allen, Duke Cunningham and your precious president and vice-president.

Adding stories now would be too late

I have never written a letter to the editor before, but because of my job and the many years I have invested volunteering in the oversight of this project, I need to respond to the editorial that ran in the Dec. 9 Burbank Leader regarding the new Community Services Building ("The city should add two floors to building"). I agree that adding two more stories to the building sounds like a terrific idea. In fact, it is such a good idea that the City Council subcommittee assigned to participate with city staff on the building planning considered the concept months ago when it became clear the bids were much higher than anticipated. After research and discussion with the professional consultants, we concluded that adding two stories to the building is not as simple as one might think.
