SPORTS ROUNDUP:Guards enjoy historic run

GIRLS' SOCCER

Bellarmine-Jefferson 3, St. Anthony 0: The Guards continued their historic season Tuesday, winning the Santa Cruz League match on the road.

The win put Bell-Jeff (7-4-1, 5-2) into second place in league. The Guards have already clinched a spot in next week's CIF Southern Section playoffs. It is the first time a Bell-Jeff team has qualified for the postseason in program history.

In the win against St. Anthony, Kelsey Carapia scored two goals and Taylor Nelson added one.

GIRLS' WATER POLO

Arcadia 7, Burbank 6: Ani Shirinian finished with a team-high two goals for the Bulldogs on Thursday in the third-place match of the Pacific League Tournament at Burbank High.

Burbank (20-8, 6-2) also got one goal each from Alex O'Connor, Arpi Khanpapyan, Katherine Lees and Jordan Meier.

Burbank — which finished fourth in the tournament — will be the league's No. 2 representative for the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs, which will begin next week.

Hoover 10, Burroughs 4: The Indians closed out their season Thursday with a loss in the fifth-place match of the Pacific League Tournament at Burbank High.

Burroughs finishes 6-15, 0-7.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson 45, St. Genevieve 30: The Guards concluded Santa Fe League play Thursday with a victory at home.

Under Coach Bryan Camacho, Bell-Jeff (18-7, 4-4) finished third in league and will be headed to the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

Ranked No. 5 in Division IVAA, the Guards have notched 14 more wins this season than they did last season.

In the win Thursday, Bell-Jeff received balanced shooting, as Joelle Hajj, Elizabeth Hawthorne and Melissa Burrola had eight points each. Hawthorne also had 14 rebounds.
