Local does well again in L.A. Marathon

Doing well in the Los Angeles Marathon is becoming old hat for local Aniceto Espinoza.

In Sunday's 22nd installment of the race, the Burbank resident had another fine effort, as Espinoza, 32, placed 32nd in 2 hours 50 minutes 9 seconds.

Last season — running on the old marathon course — he finished 48th in 2:43.33. In 2005, he was 23rd in 2 44:11.

Pioneers lead list of CIF-ranked teams

Three local teams are ranked in their respective CIF Southern Section divisions early in the season.

Leading the way is the Providence High softball team, which holds down the No. 3 spot in Division VII. The Pioneers have won two consecutive Liberty League championships.

The Burbank boys' tennis team is ranked No. 5 in Division II and the Pioneers boys' volleyball squad is No. 9 in Division V.

All three teams qualified for the playoffs last season, with the Pioneers volleyball team advancing to the semifinals for the first time in school history.
